The new Jaguar E-Pace – more than capable of keeping pace with its older brother

Following the enourmous success of the F-Pace, jaguar has decided to launch its first compact SUV, the E-Pace.

Widely tagged as the F-Pace’s little brother, albeit fat little brother, the smaller E-Pace weighs more than its big brother, but still has as much style, dynamics and attitude and handles in a way that still remains distinctly Jaguar.

Designed and engineered to be beautiful, clever and fun to drive, the new E-Pace, according to Ian Callum, design director at Jaguar and the man behind the F-Pace, “is the most playful car in Jaguar’s 81-year history.”

The E-Pace does look fantastic. In terms of design, the E-Pace has a blown up F-Type sort of look rather than that of a shrunken F-Pace. But inside it is a similar story, a comfortable and cossetted place to be, with a cockpit focused on the needs of the driver.

Packed with features

All E-Pace models are fitted with a 10in touchscreen infotainment system as standard alongside three rotary controllers. There are also up to four 12-volt charging points and five USB connections dotted around the cabin, as well as a 4G WiFi hotspot for up to eight devices.

The E-Pace features Active Driveline all-wheel drive system – a technological first for Jaguar, which delivers optimal stability, dynamics and fuel efficiency in all conditions. It also features a number of safety systems, such as high speed emergency braking, blind spot assist and front and rear parking aids as standard.

Under the bonnet, there is a choice of Ingenium petrol and diesel engines. They’re all four-cylinder units in various states of tune with the diesels available with 150, 178 and 237bhp and the petrols with 197, 246 and 296bhp – which takes the E-Pace from 0-60 in just under 6 seconds. There is also a choice of manual or automatic and front or all-wheel-drive.

The E-Pace does have a tough job on its hands though, facing competition from not only BMW’s X1 and X2, Audi’s Q3, Mercedes GLC and Volvo’s XC40, but also from within the Jaguar Land Rover camp in the shape of the Range Rover Evoque, an already established model with which it shares much of its ancestry.

Only time will tell how successful Jaguar’s new compact SUV will become, but prices start from £28,500, making the E-Pace the entry point to the Jaguar range.
